"FREE TIME" / DIE „FREIE ZEIT“

Curated by Anamarija Batista (in cooperation with Ivana Marjanović)
The question of "free time", i.e. the time when we free ourselves from existential productivity tasks in order to do something else, needs to be renegotiated in the era of digital transformation. It is a time when we have the opportunity to move freely, to meet the people we want to meet. It's a time of emotion, rapprochement and discourse. It is a time for reflection. It is a political time that can prepare us for transformations. It is atmospheric time, a time of immersion.
However, it is not only "free time" that is negotiated, but also the places and practices of this time. Free time is also linked to paths and temporalities. Whether it takes place in analogue or digital locations — in cafés, in squares, in parks, by the sea, playing digital games, etc. — it is associated with encounters, excitement, relaxation and inspiration.
This exhibition aims to reflect on the negotiation of “free time” by exploring its aesthetic layers and atmospheric clouds. What do we associate with "free" time? How are our associations changing in the wake of intensifying consumer-critical practices, and new waves of privatization and crises? To what extent is "free time" political, and how does it relate to questions of transformation?
