'Our perception is very personal and is also closely linked to our memories.
The more manifold our store of memories - which we accumulate through our experiences,
sensations and feelings - the more sophisticated our abilities to read and interpret new
perceptions. Contemporary art may disturb us, shake our sense of feeling secure within
our cultural surroundings which we treasure because we are familiar with them. We all
love the Impressionists as countless traces of recollections of their pictures are engraved
on our memory. The
KUNSTRAUM INNSBRUCK would like to be a place where we can
collect traces of recollections of contemporary art.' (Elisabeth Thoman-Oberhofer)
There was this industrial building from the 1930ies in the very heart of Innsbruck and
there was the idea to create a place at which to come face to face with the manifestations
of the art of our time.
And today there is the
KUNSTRAUM INNSBRUCK meeting this objective with exhibitions,
talks, discussions, conversations between artists, readings and concerts, while sharing one
of Innsbruck's most beautiful and busiest courtyards with a flower shop and a café-bistro.
Organisation:
The KUNSTRAUM INNSBRUCK, Verein zur Ausstellung aktueller Kunst
- Maria-Theresien-Strasse 34/Arkadenhof -
is a non-profit-making institution initiated by the gallery-owners Elisabeth and Klaus Thoman.
It is funded by Innsbruck City Council, the Art Department at the Austrian Federal
Chancellery, the Tourist Association of Innsbruck, and by the local government of the
Tyrol which also supports the service programme for visitors. On specific projects
the KUNSTRAUM also relies on the co-operation of a number of sponsors and international foundations.
Architecture:

In 1996 the 700 sq. m. warehouse space was carefully restored and adapted by the architect Hans Peter Petri who supplied it with the necessary infra-structure while retaining the greatest possible architectural flexibility.
The exhibition room proper measures about 600 sq. m.; adjoining it there is a 'Projektraum' (a separate room for smaller projects), reception area, office space with a small reference library, and storage rooms.
The tri-partite hall, structured by 8 pillars, and between 2,88 and 3,20 m in height, receives light through 9 skylights as well as large windows partly inherited from when the building was in commercial use. As and when required the room can be sub-divided at will with the help of movable walls and thus adapted to the specific needs of the respective exhibition.
Exhibition programme policy:

The exhibition programme of the KUNSTRAUM INNSBRUCK mainly focuses on
the presentation of contemporary art. Sporadically though there will also be exhibitions
dedicated to historically important movements after 1945.
The programme of the first three years was dominated by the five part series of projects
ZEITSCHNITT in which different European curators were invited to present young artists
from their respective countries in group exhibitions.
From the year 2000 the thematic orientation is more narrowly defined.
Creative processes and strategies shall be made more transparent and contemporary
artistic production reflected on against its historical background. The architectural
conditions of the exhibition space will themselves move to the fore. Some of the central
topics will accordingly revolve around head words like 'persistence' or 'practising for slowness',
as well as the examination of sensory codes. And finally we will be dealing not just with the
complex relations governing the constellation KUNSTRAUM-town-nature but also with the
question what it might mean being a 'province'.
Projektraum:

For two years from March 1999 the 'Projektraum' serves as a venue for
medien.kunst.tirol .
The curators organising the events are
Stefan Bidner and
Thomas
Feuerstein.
The exhibitions in the KUNSTRAUM INNSBRUCK are generally arranged by curators
invited for the specific project at hand.

'Projektraum'
Service program for visitors:

On the first Saturday after the opening night the curator leads a guided tour
and explains the concept of his or her exhibition. During the following 'Round Table'
the artist or artists involved are present to answer questions.
In addition every exhibition is accompanied by a sophisticated program of events
aimed at different target groups of both adults and children resp. students.
Guided tours in the evening (every Thursday), art info
('Kunstauskunft' -
a conversation one to one, every Saturday).
For students too three formats are on offer: guided tour, mediated discussion and conversation.
These differ in didactic method and duration. Teachers receive a booklet to help them both
prepare for the visit with their class and to continue the discussion after.
Moreover special events for groups are organised by prior arrangement.

In the course of the exhibition The Invisible Touch in the spring of 2000,
40 T-shirts were produced for the KUNSTRAUM INNSBRUCK using luminous
material, which - when zipped up - can be used as shoulder bags. In early March
visitors to the event 'Funky Meeting' at the Utopia in Innsbruck wore these items
of clothing. By moving around the room they kept re-structuring it as a kind of
movable body sculptures.
